TEPEE NEWS

Big Lottery Play funding

You may have seen in the press that Teignbridge has been successful in its application to the BIG lottery Play Fund and has been granted £230,000 for 4 play projects over three years.

We are very pleased to announce that two of these projects will be delivered by TEPEE. Project 1 is a Play Ranger project that will cover 4 parks over the next 3 years. Play Ranger sessions are free open access play sessions for children in their local park. There will be one session a week in 4 parks for a year each, however we will be looking to access further funding and ways of making this service a sustainable one so that they can continue beyond the life of the current funding.

Project 2 is ‘Play in the Park’ which will work with local parish councils to provide play sessions on their play spaces and parks. We will work with the communities to encourage more use of parks and do some consultation on how to improve existing facilities. This work will be backed up by support from Teignbridge council for voluntary services (CVS) who can provide information to parish councils about funding to make improvements to their parks.

We are very excited about this new work and Adele and I are rolling up our sleeves in preparation for a lot of hard work over the next 3 years.

We hope to start delivery of these projects in May and will be recruiting a small team of Play workers to work on both projects. See job advert in employment section, and on our website.

The next Surestart Play day we are organising is on Saturday 24th March at Broadmeadow sports centre from 1-4pm. The theme is Active Play and it will be a fun packed afternoon with lots of physical and sporty activities for young children and their families.

We now have our new brochures for the TEPEE Resource Library. So, please have a browse through and see if there is anything that you would like to borrow for your play setting. Contact Adele on her new number 07982 591606 to arrange hire and collection.

TEPEE attended the last Teignbridge Network meeting in February and displayed our musical instruments for hire. We asked Sarah van Veen to come and demonstrate how we might use the instruments with young children. It was a fun evening and Sarah had us all singing and playing and gave us some very good ideas. She also gave us handouts with all her ideas. If you would like one when borrowing the musical instruments, just ask.

Forest School has come to Highweek Primary School. TEPEE is delivering an exciting 6 week programme of forest school activities for reception class pupils from Highweek. The sessions are held at Bakers park woods and we have been having great fun learning and playing in a wonderfully muddy natural environment. We hope to do more of these sessions in the future and will be offering them to primary schools as a package they can buy in. and challenging way. Theo.

Activity Idea

Cracking Ideas for Easter!

Although eggs are traditionally seen as a symbol of Easter, like many Christian festivals, it has its roots in much older celebrations, marking new beginnings, birth and springtime. Here are some ideas that can be used all year round (source Clare Hadley – article in Playwords magazine: issue 12 Mar 2000).

Patterned Eggs – an unusual and effective way of decorating.

You will need:

bulletA pair of old (and clean!) tights. One white egg (the pattern shows up better on white than brown eggs)
bulletOnion skins
bulletSmall green leaves

What to do:

bulletCut off one leg of the tights and make a tube with one leg.
bulletPlace the egg (carefully!) in the tube.
bulletArrange the leaves around the egg in the tube – make sure that they stay flat against the nylon.
bulletStretch the nylon tight and fasten the open end of the tube, either by tying it or with a piece of string.
bulletMake a natural dye by putting the onion skins in a pan of water, boiling and simmering.
bulletWhen you have a dye, place the egg in it’s tube in the pan.
bulletSimmer for between 10 – 15 minutes.
bulletRemove the egg from the water, and allow to cool before removing the tube.
bulletYou should have a coloured, patterned egg!

Mr and Ms Mustard Head – an old favourite, but it’s the faces that make all the difference!

You will need:

bulletEggshells with a hole in the top
bulletSomething for the eggshell to stand in – eg eggcup, part of an eggbox
bulletMustard seeds (you could also use cress seeds)
bulletCotton wool
bulletThick marker pens

What to do:

bulletPut the eggshell in it’s container and fill it with wet cotton wool. Sprinkle some of the mustard seeds on the cotton wool.
bulletUse the markers to draw a face on the eggshells – why not get the children to draw themselves or each other!
bulletLeave the eggshells on a window sill for a few days and don’t forget to keep the cotton wool moist.

Watch Mr and Ms Mustard Head grow hair, and don’t forget to encourage the children to eat the results!
