TEPEE News

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We hope you like our new look for the Tepee newsletter. As you will see we have a few new pages and we would like to encourage you to send in ideas for the activity page and also news from your groups. Adele and I have taken the opportunity of this fairly quiet period to organise the resource library, quite a task as we have SO MUCH stuff!!!! Our new premises is now shelved, boxes are sorted and labelled and everything is much easier to find.

I have also been cataloguing everything and our new catalogue is now available. If you want to have a look it will be on  our website www.tepee.org.uk  we will be sending it out to all our members soon. Remember as a member you can borrow anything for a week, for £5. We have a huge amount of percussion instruments which are in box sets, so you can choose from African drums and percussion for 8 children to larger sets of up to 30 instruments. We also have xylophones, large drums, a steel drum and a washboard! So if you fancy drumming in the New Year, why not give us a call and book out some of these fantastic instruments.

Before Christmas we had fun at the Teignbridge Early Years and Childcare Service (EYCS) - formerly zero14plus - Network meeting on the 30th November. Sue, Jackie and Georgina had organised an evening of Christmas crafts and Tepee showed people how to make stars out of willow, for Christmas decorations. The evening was well attended and we hope to collaborate with the EYCS on their network meetings throughout 2007. All the best, Theo.

Membership fees

It was decided at the AGM that it is time to increase our membership fees. We have not put them up for the last 3 years, but due to inflation and the increased cost of insurance we do have to raise them now. They will be as follows:

Group A     £60 to include 1 yr playscheme insurance

Group B     £48 includes summer playscheme ins.

Group C     £20 for a group, without insurance

Single person    £10

The insurance is subsidized by 40% and is still a huge saving! This may be a good time to check if your membership is up to date.

Funding Advice

CHILDCARE FUNDING FOR NEW AND EXISTING CHILDCARE PLACES

The government Sure Start Unit (SSU) has allocated the County Council funding for the development of childcare places in Devon.

The SSU is not prescriptive in the type of childcare places to be created but leaves this to the local authority to decide in the light of the childcare audit of existing places, analysis of market conditions and consultations with parents and carers.

The range of childcare includes:

· Out of school care – Breakfast Clubs, After School Clubs and Holiday Play schemes;

· Wrap-around care for pre-school ages;

· Day-care for under three year olds;

· Childminding care.

Zero 14 plus District Co-ordinators work with groups and potential new providers in areas

identifying a need for new childcare places. To find out more and to check eligibility contact Sue Bolt - Senior District Co-ordinator, Georgina Bennett and Jackie Colby - District Coordinators, 01392 384926.

TEIGNBRIDGE DISTRICT COUNCIL –

RURAL AID FUND

The District Council considers applications

annually towards projects in the rural areas of the district. Amounts of between £500 and £5,000 can be applied for but you must get the support of your parish council. For more information contact: David Beer, Teignbridge District Council, Forde House, Newton Abbot, Devon TQ12 4XX. Tel: 01626 215133 email: DBeer@teignbridge.gov.uk

YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES FUND AND

Devon County Council has been given two

funds, worth more than a million pounds over the next two years, to give to the young people of Devon. The funds are called: Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) and the Youth Capital Fund (YCF)

Youth Capital Fund – this fund is just for capital items such as:

· Help build or improve a skate park

· Equip a youth centre or redecorate it

· Help build a shelter in your local park

· Buy a mobile youth centre that could offer services to young people in rural areas

Youth Opportunities Fund could be used for:

· Employing a specialist coach for your sports team

· Increase the times your youth centre is open

· Start a youth club or

· Train to become someone who can advise your friends on health or staying safe.

For more information contact: Devon Youth Service, Great Moor House, Bittern Road, Exeter, EX2 7NL.

IT GRANTS FOR UK VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS

This does not affect any core funding and applications are on a first come, first served basis. This fund offers £10,000 grants for the development of IT requirements and can cover PC’s, website development, training, software and any capital items you may require. Typical projects that have been awarded include community regeneration/enrichment, community activities and those groups that involve their community in learning new skills. Applicants will be assisted with knowledge of the IT available and guidance on how best to maximise the grant with IT that suits its purpose.
