Play in the Park

(This project ended in August 2010.)

This project was funded by the Big Lottery Play Fund and ran for a duration of 3 years which started in 2007. Our aim was to work with Town and Parish Councils to provide some free play sessions for children on playgrounds, play areas and parks owned by the councils.

The sessions generally aim to:

  • E

ncourage the use of open play spaces by children and families.

  • E

ncourage children to play outdoors to benefit their health and well-being

  • E

ncourage children to make new friends of all ages and contribute to being part of the community.

  • E

ncourage children to respect their environment and make positive use of it.

  • E

ncourage children to learn through play, and try new things.

As a starting point we work closely with the Town and Parish councils, to identify local use of play spaces, any existing issues or problems surrounding these sites, and if we can be any use in promoting ideas, gathering information and opinions or tackling problems while we work in the park.

The main part of our work is directly with the children in the park. These Play sessions are very similar to our outreach work ~ ‘Freewheeling’. We have been offering free play sessions for children aged 4-14 years, with a variety of activities, games and entertainment. Children are able to come and go as they please and join in as they wish.

The sessions are open to all children of any ability and we will ensure that all activities are fully inclusive and adapted to meet all needs. Children under 8 need to be accompanied by an adult, which is stated in all publicity. All children are the responsibility of the parents at all times. We aim to provide activities that make the best use of the park.

Activities may include: environmental play, sports and games, creative art and craft, drama and music, water play. We are guided by the needs of the community and the desire of the local council, to build a programme of activity that has a lasting impact and sparks off some plans for the future.

This project finishes in August 2010, but sessions are still available to Parish councils at a fee of £322.00
