Play Ranger Project

What is a play ranger and what do they do?

n     Play Rangers work in parks and open spaces to ensure that all children have access to safe and challenging play opportunities

n     They listen to what children say that they need and work with the local community and other agencies to provide for children’s needs.

n     They help to raise the awareness of the importance of play for children and the right of children to use public spaces to play in.

n     They offer children more choices by showing them games, activities and acting as positive role models.

Play Rangers summer programme 2008

This summer the Play Rangers have been busy in Sandringham Park, Buckland, Newton Abbot and we have had lots of fun with a good variety of activities for the young people attending the sessions, the weather has been very mixed for us but rain has never stopped play!

We have had some really good sessions with activities such as water play, nature walks, climbing nets and den building.

Also this summer we have also had the pleasure to return to Buckfastleigh for four weeks of summer fun working alongside the ABC Children’s Centre in Victoria Park.

We would like to thank the staff from the ABC Children’s Centre for there support and invitation to join them for the sessions.

On returning to the park in Buckfastleigh we were able to see the short term effect that the project has had on the community since the projects funding came to an end in talking to some of the families that used to attend Play Rangers it seems that the park is still being used regularly by families with children since the projects funding for Buckfastleigh ended in June and it was also made clear that the project has been missed by the children, there was lots of positive feedback coming from the families attending about the Play Ranger project being fed back to us from the ABC Children’s Centre staff and this was good to hear.

The Play Ranger project is now gearing up for starting in Teignmouth at Coombe Valley park at the end of September, this should be a great park for the Play Rangers to work in with lots of potential for all sorts of exciting activities. We also have an announcement that we have a new member to the Play Ranger team Anna Penkala who will be working alongside Robin in Teignmouth, Anna has lots of experience and skills to bring to the Play Rangers project and we would like to welcome her aboard.

Let’s hope the next few months are as exciting!

Current project background

In 2007 TEPEE's proposal for a Play Ranger project in Teignbridge was successful in the District Council's application for funding from the Big Lottery Play Fund. This will provide 1 play session a week in 4 different parks over 3 years. Each park has funding to run for 12 months and will look for further funding from the local communities to continue the project further. Following our recruitment of 2 more staff, Play Rangers are now back at Victoria Park, Buckfastleigh . After 8 months another play ranger project will start in Buckland and Milber in Newton Abbot, and then go on to cover Dawlish and Heathfield.

In Buckfastleigh children have been coming down to the park to have fun, hang out with friends and join in with activities that are guided by them and facilitated by the Play Rangers. We have a good team of very skilled workers: Robin Brown, Steve Bowers and Sally Fisher who enable the children and young people to have a positive experience of being in the park.

The Rangers will be operating in Newton Abbot’s Sandringham Park, Milber, every Monday from 3-6pm. We hope to see you there!

History of TEPEE Play Ranger Projects

TEPEE carried out pilot projects in 2005 and 2006 (full reports below), and since then have been applying for funding for longer term projects and ways of establishing a sustainable future for play rangers. There has been a growing interest in the development of play rangers both locally and nationally, as it offers solutions to anti-social behaviour, vandalism, bullying and provides free play opportunities, the building of communities and the greater use of parks and open play spaces.

Play Wales have been developing a training programme for play rangers and Playwork Partnerships are also now offering a course 'Playing on the Range' - for more information on this course go to http://www.playwork.co.uk/index.asp?page=skills#tutortraining

The first Play Ranger conference has also just been held in Torbay at the Riviera Centre on 16th November 2007. Click here  to read about the Play Ranger Conference - 'free range childhood'.
